Delta Community Garden
Delta Community Garden welcomes everyone who wishes to join us to grow food. We grow delicious fresh vegetables for the Delta Community meal, the Delta Foodbank, and for those who join us in the garden.
We hold garden and cooking courses. Grow Your Own Free Lunch is a free course which allows participants to learn basic gardening, harvesting, and cooking skills. Phone Mary on 942 6840 or 389 0212 to find out when the next course is.
The garden replaces what was previously a concrete wasteland. Mary and Tim designed the garden. Then the concrete cutters came and removed the concrete from the garden beds. The beds were edged in wood. Next came the hard part - removing the base course and bringing up the soil from underneath. At first the soil was dank and sour. Our soil came alive when it was double dug and mixed with saw dust and horse poo.
Next we grew blue lupins and mustard as green manure plants. We built compost bins out of old potato crates and located them on the ends of the garden beds. Finally the vegetable crops were grown.
We were all surprised at the vitality and strength of the vegetables that were grown. Most weeks of the year we harvest a crate of vegetables from the garden. Sometimes in spring we can harvest 3 crates.
Grass clippings from a local gardener has been a main contributor to our soil fertility.
The vegetables create a relaxing green space, vibrant with healthy food. Feel welcome to enjoy our garden.
