Welcome to New Brighton Community Gardens
Volunteers and visitors are welcome at our Gardens in Rawhiti Domain near the New Brighton village shops. We have been running for 9 years and during the last 3 years of turmoil we have been able to continue to offer a place of calm and positive activity for many locals who have been dealing with extra stresses. Volunteers share their life challenges, along with positive stories and encouragement. We find a job for everyone as we see the wellbeing benefits of getting into action and achieving a productive Garden together.
We are open Mon, Wed and Fri 10-4, and Sat 10-2. Volunteers bring their own lunch and we eat together at 12.30.
The increasing valuing of neighbourhoods and self reliance has led to more people volunteering here and a strong interest in our growing and sustainability workshops.
How the garden came about
Our Gardens came about when a local woman with City Council work experience saw the potential for a community garden in this area and on this site. There are a lot of low income families in the wider New Brighton area so the new Trustees were motivated by the idea of providing hands on learning about how to grow very low cost, quality food.
We started with some individual plots but changed to shared gardening where people do garden or maintenance tasks in exchange for free veges and workshop attendance. Our website has current workshop information and our famous monthly newsletter! www.nbgardens.org.nz
